Velvet Marauders

Well they ride in the night, and they drift right away in the dark
They’re dressed to the nines and they hang in the community park
They pillage the town and the fabric shops are their aim
The softer the cloth, the harder you’ll fall to their game

No one can stop them now
Velvet Marauders on your town

They’re the blight of the block in their tall tailored socks, best beware
They’re the talk of the town with the bright colored gowns that they wear
As they’re stalking around leaving fabric scraps on the ground
I’m hot on their tail, keen to find where their tailor gets down

No one can stop them now
Velvet Marauders on your town

All these years on the chase have twisted me
I got holes in my sole and ripped jeans on my knees
Spending my days in denim is misery
But at night my dreams are soft and velvety
On a cold winter morning I caught them smug in their sheets
Their garb was awrinkled, had yet to iron their pleats
How could I foresee that this would be the way we’d meet
With my jeans soft and spotless and their velvet spoiled by the street

And like that they had vanished
Could it be the Marauders were gone?
They took off with no warning
Left a horse and a loom in the dawn
There I se set up my post
For someone must ride on

I thought it was velvet, the curtain coverall of my dreams
Now I see that it is denim: bulging, bursting the seams

No one can stop me now
The Denim Derelict is in town
